»Schatten der Vergangenheit« (shadows of the past). Collaboration with Sven Frisch, Part II

38cm Raketenwerfer (rocket launcher) 61 auf Sturmmörser (assault gun) "Sturmtiger"

Sven had the idea of modelling  a "Sturmtiger" split into one "Then"-half, which was to be painted exclusively in Black and White, and a "Now"-half, which would show the same vehicle in a coloured museum scene. I was meant to make two figures representing the same man as a soldier at wartime and by far later as a visitor of the museum.

Even though I have been rather enthusiastic about this idea from on the beginning, I got even deeper into it when the following idea struck me: Why not incorporate an extra shift from colour to B/W into both representations of the same person? Making the old man mainly B/W and mainly colour the soldier instead would visualize the idea that while looking at the tank he had manned at war the old man was pulled back into the past by his terrifying memories. Only his grandchild representing the civilian (pop-)culture of the present keeps his mind from wasting away.

A two part article dealing with construchtion and painting of the vehicle resp. the figures is featured in the German issue of the "Art of Modelling", issue 02/July-August 2010 and issue 04 / November-December 2010. A complete description of this project is also available in issue 168 / July 2010 of the Italian  "Model Time". Another short description is featured in the Japanese "Armour Modelling", issue 141/July 2011.
